Celebrating 20 years of SAP Consultancy

()

This summer I am celebrating 20 years of technical SAP consultancy ... time surely flies when one is having fun :-)

The SAP adventure started way back for me in 1995 when I graduated from school and got a chance to start working as a consultant at Anderson Consulting (currently known as ‘Accenture’).

I was introduced into the SAP R/3 3.0 eco system and its programming language ABAP/4. The start of an interesting technical journey which led through many changes and iterations of different technologies.  I always had an interest in 'the internet' so it was only 'logical' I ended up doing most of my work in those area's once SAP started integrating its systems via a range of products and technologies ...

The SAP technical environment itself has seen some enormous changes over those years:

The SAP basis system itself changed dramatically: coming from the standard SAP ABAP stack into the SAP Netweaver stack with full dual support of ABAP and JAVA and the extension of ABAP into ABAP OO and now recently the introduction of the SAP HANA (XS) system.
The diversity of front-end technologies within those 20 years has been astonishing:  SAP GUI, SAP Internet Transaction Server (ITS), Business Server Pages (BSP), Java WebDynpro, ABAP WebDynpro and now lately SAPUI5 (JavaScript) & SAP Fiori ... Also on the integration part technologies & products have been changing: SAP Business Connector (BC), SAP Exchange Infrastructure (XI), SAP Process Infrastructure (PI), SAP Process Orchestration (PO), SAP Gateway, etc. ...

Looking back I can say that the most important lesson I learned so far would be: "never stop learning, always stay open-minded and don't fear the change".

And now again we are currently on the start of a new decade of SAP revolution with the introduction of SAP HANA (XS) as the in-memory database system and the new SAP S/4 HANA ERP system ... I am looking forward on getting started in those as well ...

openSAP Course SAP's UX Strategy in a Nutshell

()

The openSAP course "SAP's UX Strategy in a Nutshell" by Sam Yen is a 3 hour course aimed at everyone to understand SAP's UX strategy for the coming years. I have followed this quick course and it was interesting to learn that SAP Fiori and thus its underlying SAPUI5 ( or HTML5 ) technology is becoming the defacto UX technology for any 'new' built solutions.  Initially the SAP Fiori apps were scoped / designed as a 'renew' attempt by bringing a consumerized UI for the most used functionalities within SAP.  The positive reaction of customers combined with its friendly UI ensured its place as 'the' new UI within the SAP ecosystem.  ►

()

The openSAP course 'Introduction to Mobile Solution Development for the Enterprise' just ended this week after 6 weeks of exploring SAP's vision on the 'mobile enablement of the enterprise'. Just like the SAP HANA course, the quality of delivered learning content ( video's and presentations ) was outstanding.

The course tried to discuss & explain the different mobile programming approaches ... from 'pure mobile web sites', via hybrid web applications ( using Cordova ( Phonegap ) ) to native developed (Android) applications ... and how SAP tools fit into those programming approaches. SAP clearly puts the focus on its new HTML5 client front-end framework SAPUI5, the usage of OData services and the integration of mobile applications with the new SAP Mobile Platform 3.0 (SMP).  ►

SAP HANA XS provides a complete development environment for building so-called 'native' applications. SAP Business Connector

Performing an upgrade at Game Mania of SAP Business Connector to the latest release - 4.8 - which may sound as a 'surprise' or 'old school'.
